SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITIES OUTSTANDING DESIGN AWARD 2014
The August 2014 issue of Schools & Universities Magazine has recognized the Elgin Community College Health and Life Sciences with its Outstanding Design award in the Educational Interiors Showcase. The award is judged annually by a jury of American Institute of Architects (AIA) members assessing projects by criteria including 21st century learning strategies, longevity/timeless design, security/safety, inviting design, community, connectivity, healthy environment, innovation and learning. The magazine stated: “The building’s learning spaces were designed to offer experiential educational opportunities and include laboratories, simulation classrooms and problem-based learning rooms.”
LEARNING BY DESIGN AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2014
The October 2014 issue of LEARNING BY DESIGN honors the ECC Health and Life Sciences building in its annual Awards of Excellence edition. The award recognizes the Health and Life Sciences building for its real world, hands-on learning experience with state-of-the-art interiors founded on the real look and feel of a hospital. “The building is unique in that it serves a dual role as both a health professional educational facility and gateway to the campus for visitors and new students. A flagship edifice, the facility features a central three-story glass atrium meant to be a glittering “magnet” by day and a glowing beacon by night, drawing newcomers to its entrance. The jury commented that “this is a restrained but elegant building that meets real-world and interdisciplinary needs while serving as the front door to the campus. “
LEED CERTIFICATION 2014
In 2014 the Health and Life Sciences building also received LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council for implementing practical, measurable strategies and solutions in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
