Joliet Junior College Steam Pipe System Replacement with Condensing Boilers
In 2018, Joliet Junior College hired the kluber team for a project that involved the fast-tracked design and construction administration for the removal of aging steam heat exchangers and the installation of high-efficiency, gas-fired hot water boilers in each mechanical room across the campus. To ensure reliable building heating, each mechanical room was equipped with multiple boilers to provide built-in redundancy.
New natural gas piping was installed from the existing central boiler house and distributed to each of the buildings receiving new equipment. The design included careful planning and coordination to route gas piping through, above, and around existing buildings and site constraints. Each building was configured with individual metering for energy monitoring and management, all fed from a centrally located main meter.
Despite the complexities of utility routing and the need to minimize operational disruption, the project was completed on an accelerated timeline, aligning with seasonal heating demands and campus operational needs.
