Northbrook Junior High School Mechanical Systems Renovation

Northbrook, Illinois

Northbrook Junior High School has undergone nine facility additions to accommodate increased enrollment. In 2007, Kluber Architects + Engineers completed a full mechanical systems renovation, including a chiller replacement at the junior high school.

The old system consisted of two inefficient and oudivated chilled water plants, which were quickly becoming expensive environmental hazards.

Kluber reduced the number of pumps and consolidated the school’s antiquated chillers into a single energy-efficient system. The result is a new system that utilizes 70 percent less power, emits no CFCs and is oil free.

A second component of the project was a boiler system upgrade. The new system enabled the district to cut emissions from 50 ppm to 15 ppm, making them 18% more efficient. These numbers far exceed government standards. Originally built in 1959, the Northbrook Junior High School is now Energy Star certified.
