Project Details

Kluber Architects + Engineers was selected by Shive-Hattery, Inc. to provide MEP/FP engineering services for the interior buildout of a cannabis cultivation laboratory space at Oakton College’s Des Plaines campus. The goal of the laboratory is to educate prospective students on the cannabis industry, replicating the experience of working in a cultivation facility so they may be adequately prepared for this up-and-coming career field.

The addition of the cultivation lab is the first of its kind at an Illinois community college. The approximately 3,000 square foot lab includes humidity, temperature, aeration, grow lights, and security controls, with three grow rooms and an area for plant drying/waste.

The brand-new laboratory empowers students on how to cultivate, cure, and dry plants to prepare for processing and packaging.

The cultivation lab will support students who are pursuing a career in the medical cannabis field, with the College offering a certificate program to assist in career development for students.

Furthermore, students enrolled in the College’s new programming will learn additional skills such as energy conservation and even environmental efficiency.
